Deputy Sheriff
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office is now taking applications for the position of Deputy Sheriff. We are looking for both certified and uncertified applicants.
Applications can be found on our website at poweshiekcounty.org/employment or can be picked up at our office located at 4802 Barnes City Rd, Montezuma, IA. Applications must be received no later than 4:00 pm May 24th, 2024.
Uncertified Applicants:
We will be conducting physical agility testing at Grinnell High School at 8:00 am June 1st, followed by a written test (POST) at the Grinnell Public Safety Building. Each candidate will be required to present a state driver’s license before participating in the testing process.
Iowa Certified Peace Officers:
DO NOT have to take the physical agility test or the POST test. Certified applicants do not need to be present for the June 1st testing.
Civil Service interviews for both certified and non-certified applicants will be conducted at the Poweshiek County courthouse and are currently scheduled for June 13, 2024.
Effective July 1, 2024:
Starting pay for non-certified applicants is $31.49/hour.
Certified applicants are eligible to begin as high as $38.24/hour depending on qualifications and experience. Deputies will top out at $40.15/hour July 1, 2025, per the union contract. Poweshiek County also offers longevity pay in addition to the rates given and offers excellent health and dental insurance options.
