Board of Supervisors Meeting

The Board of Supervisors meets every Monday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Meetings are held in the board room on the main floor of the Courthouse, south annex.

Items to be placed on the Board's agenda should be submitted to the Auditor's office by 4:00 p.m. on the Thursday prior to the meeting.

Draconid Meteor Shower Watch

Come on out to catch a glimpse of a shooting star! The Draconid Meteor shower produces about 5 meteors an hour, and the best time to see one is right after sunset! 

We'll start at 7:00 with introductions and a very quick lesson on what a meteor is and where to look for one. We'll walk about half a mile along the paved trail to a site with a good view of the sky, and from there we'll just keep an eye on the sky. Bring friends, a blanket or camp chair, a flashlight and some snacks, and settle in to watch the sky!

Kayaking at Diamond Lake

RSVPs are required for kayaking. To RSVP, call Amy at 319-213-5607.

Meet at the Diamond Lake Boat Ramp. Beginners welcome! All sessions start with a quick lesson. Kayaks and life jackets are provided.. These events will be held regularly throughout the summer and fall, and are a great time to do something as a family, meet up with an old friend, or make new friends!

Homeschool and Preschool Nature Explorers

We'll meet up twice a month to talk about a seasonal nature topic, and hike, play a game, or do a craft. Lessons are designed for Pre-K through 5th grade, but learners of all ages (from baby siblings to grandparents!) are welcome. We'll meet at the main shelter whenever weather permits, but as it cools down this fall look for a reminder text from Amy on Mondays that will tell the location and topic for Tuesday's program.  Call Amy to get added to the list to receive texts this year. 

Homeschool and Preschool Nature Explorers

We'll meet up twice a month to talk about a seasonal nature topic, and hike, play a game, or do a craft. Lessons are designed for Pre-K through 5th grade, but learners of all ages (from baby siblings to grandparents!) are welcome. We'll meet at the main shelter whenever weather permits, but as it cools down this fall look for a reminder text from Amy on Mondays that will tell the location and topic for Tuesday's program.  Call Amy to get added to the list to receive texts this year.

Building Better Birders

Join us for the final Building Better Birders Workshop in Poweshiek County. A full schedule for all Iowa Counties is available at www.buildingbetterbirders.com

In October we will be focusing on the birds of Iowa's lakes and wetlands, with a lunch and learn talk about waterbirds, followed by several hours exploring the shorelines of the  Fox Forest Wetlands and Diamond Lake Park. At the end of the day we'll head back to the Foster Center to wrap up with a talk about Iowa's waterfowl and upland game birds. 

Funding for this workshop was provided by the Resource Enhancement and Protection - Conservation Education Program (REAP-CEP). This workshop will be conducted by Kelly McKay (BioEco Research and Monitoring Center), with assistance from Mark Robberts (Clinton County Conservation), Brian Ritter and James Wiebler (Nahant Marsh Ed. Center.

Time: 11 AM-6:45 PM (Come for as many or as few of sessions as you would like! Session 1 will be a lunch and learn. Please bring a sack lunch!

Session 1: 11 AM-12:30 PM “Waterbirds of Iowa” Presentaiton at Diamond Lake Park.

12:30 PM-12:45 PM Break

Session 2: 12:45 PM-4:45 PM Bird Hike at Diamond Lake Park and Fox Forest Wetland.

4:45 PM-5:15 PM Break

Session 3: 5:15 PM-6:45 PM “Waterfowl and Upland Gamebirds of Iowa” Presentation at Diamond Lake Park.

Come put your kayaking skill to use on a larger lake! We'll explore the lake at the DNR's Hawthorne Lake Wildlife Management Area, just 15 minutes southeast of Diamond Lake in Barnes City. We'll meet at the west boat ramp. Amy can help give you directions when you call to RSVP.
