Fleming Woods Wildflower Hike

Join Naturalist Amy as we explore Fleming Woods State Preserve, focusing on spring ephemeral wildlflowers such as Dutchman's breeches, and Virginia bluebells. This event is open to people of all ages. Long pants and closed toed shoes are recommened.

Homeschool and Preschool Nature Explorers

We'll meet up twice a month to talk about a seasonal nature topic, and hike, play a game, or do a craft. Lessons are designed for Pre-K through 5th grade, but learners of all ages (from baby siblings to grandparents!) are welcome. We'll meet at the main shelter whenever weather permits, but as it cools down this fall look for a reminder text from Amy on Mondays that will tell the location and topic for Tuesday's program.  Call Amy to get added to the list to receive texts this year.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the last program of the season! We will pause our Nature Explorers programming during peak field trip season (late April - mid-May) and then sessions will start back up in the summer! 

Summer Nature Explorers - Tiny lake critters

We'll meet up twice a month to talk about a seasonal nature topic, and hike, play a game, or do a craft. Lessons are designed for Pre-K through 5th grade, but learners of all ages (from baby siblings to grandparents!) are welcome. We'll meet at the main shelter throughout the summer. 

For our first summer outing we'll do some dip netting in the edge of the lake to see what critters are living there. While we might also find frogs and minnows, the most common critters in our lake are the tiny ones we barely notice: including dragonfly larvae, aquatic worms, water beetles, snails and more. We won't get in the lake - but we'll explore the lakeshore with nets and buckets so dress appropriately and bring a sense of adventure! 

We will have long handled nets and tubs of water to make it easier to get a close look from dry land as well!

Garlic Mustard Pull at Blue Point Woods

Celebrate Earth Day with Poweshiek County Conservation Staff for a morning in the woods as we pull garlic mustard. Garlic mustard is an invasive species that can take over in Iowa woodlands and prevent the growth of native flowers. We'll explore the property and look at spring ephemeral wildflowers as we go! 

Long pants, closed toed shoes, and gloves are recommended for this event.

Hunter Education Class

This class is the in-person component required for youth under 18. Prior to class students must complete the online component. Allow youth plenty of time to complete the online portion as some modules take several hours to complete.
