Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office

 Full Time Deputy Sheriff

Applications will be accepted December 16th 2024 through January 17th 2025 to fill a full time Deputy Sheriff position with the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not necessarily limited to:
• Enforcing the laws of the State of Iowa and all other County and local ordinances
• Patrolling an assigned area, investigating all levels of crimes, traffic enforcement, accident investigation and preparing reports
• Assisting in cases of fires, accidents, rescues, hazardous materials and mental health crisis
• Restoring order, regulating traffic and preparing necessary reports
• Serving warrants, subpoenas, and legal papers; handling and supervising evictions, performing repossessions
• Appearing in court and testifying
• Assisting on medical calls with CPR and first aid
• Performing all other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR IOWA LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
To qualify for the position of Deputy Sheriff with the Poweshiek County you must meet the following requirements:
• U.S. citizenship and a resident of Iowa upon employment
• Age 18 or older at the time of appointment
• Current Iowa driver's license or the ability to obtain one before the date of appointment
• Ability to read and write the English language
• High school diploma or GED
• Good physical, mental, and emotional condition as determined by a physician
• Uncorrected vision of not worse than20/100 in either eye, correctable to 20/20, and normal color vision
• Normal hearing in each ear
• Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol, be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation, and have not been convicted of a felony
• Not, by reason of conscience or belief, be opposed to the use of force, when appropriate or necessary to fulfill duties

Uncertified Applicants:

We will be conducting physical agility testing at the Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center located at the Grinnell College. Testing will begin promptly at 0800 hours on January 25th, 2025. The Police Officer Selection Test (POST) will be administered at the Grinnell Police Department following the successful completion of the physical agility testing. You must present a state identification card prior to participating in the any steps of the testing.

Iowa Certified Peace Officers:

Certified Iowa Peace Officers will not be required to participate in the physical agility testing or the POST testing.

Civil Service interviews for Certified and non-Certified applicants will be conducted on January 25th, 2025. The interviews will be held in Grinnell at a location that will be determined at a later date.

Starting pay for non-Certified Deputies is $31.49/hour.

Certified Deputies are eligible to begin at the top of the pay scale at $38.24/hour depending on qualifications and experience. Deputies pay will top out at $40.15/hour effective July 1st, 2025 as stated in our Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Union. Poweshiek County offers longevity pay in addition to the rates listed above and offers excellent health and dental insurance options. Upon appointment, Deputies will earn 1 week vacation during the first year of employment and receive 10 paid Holidays and 1 paid personal day per year.
