Important Information to Understand Budget Statements

Property owners in Poweshiek County and across Iowa will receive a mailing containing information about the proposed property tax levy for the next budget year that starts July 1. A new state law (Iowa Code 24.2A) requires the Poweshiek County Auditor to mail a budget statement to property owners by March 20.
As required by Iowa Code 24.2A, the budget statement will include the following information for the taxes payable in September 2025 and March 2026 for a property owner’s school district, city, and county:
- Date, time & location for the first public hearing to consider proposed property tax levy
- Phone number & website, if applicable
- Current, effective, and proposed tax levy
- Current distribution of taxes
- Comparison of current and proposed taxation for a residential property and commercial property values
This budget statement is not a property tax bill. Very important to understand that the actual impact of tax rates on your property could be quite different than the examples in the statement, which do not factor in any possible changes in assessed value nor the differences in assessment limitations (rollbacks). Further, these statements do not include proposed taxation from smaller taxing authorities, such as community college, assessor, township, or agricultural extension. Property owners with more than one property may receive multiple statements if those properties are in different tax districts.
Additional information regarding the budget statement will be made available on the Iowa Department of Management’s website at https://dom.iowa.gov/local-government/citizen-property-tax-guide This website also has a great tool where you can enter the assessed value of your property and then enter the rates from current year and proposed for next year from the statement you received in the mail. You can find your assessed value at this site https://beacon.schneidercorp.com/?site=PoweshiekCountyIA . Be sure to use the 2023 values for the current year (FY25) and 2024 values for the proposed year (FY26).
Questions about the public hearing or the proposed property taxation should be directed to the school district, county, or city contact information on the budget statement. Or for further information, contact your county auditor at 641-623-5443.
